I’ve made one of these “Things I Use” pages because I love reading other people’s. Handy to see what people are hacking away at, right? Also it’s kind of flexing your geek credentials.

In no particular order, I give you … the software. Huge shoutouts and air horn sound effects to the geniuses who make this stuff, you are truly gods among us mortals.

Text Editors

Vim

Modal text editors are mind-bending. You’re in one mode SMASH CUT now you’re annoyingly in another. But once you wrap your head around text as objects, the elegance envelops you and carries you to another plane. You can always unplug your machine to quit, anyway.

Sublime Text

When Textmate gradually faded into abandonware, I flailed around looking for a replacement. Sublime really does live up to its name – infinitely customisable, it’s a lean mean ascii machine that launches faster than it has any business launching. Plus it has vim bindings. And its multi cursor is the best in the business.

Visual Studio Code

It’s based on the Electron framework so it’s not as snappy as the aforementioned editors, but what it lacks in snap it more than makes up for in might.
