Press fewer keys! Gmail has added autocomplete to Gmail Labs, works with your contact list right out of the box. It even includes advanced searches … type ph, and the autocomplete popup suggests “has photos”. If you select that, it expands to filename:(jpg OR jpeg OR png). Zap.

Safari 4 Beta and Rails Apps

For some reason Safari 4 Beta broke the CSS on our intranet’s Rails app. On closer inspection, it appeared to have been confused by the “cache killer” – the random number appended to external CSS and JavaScript urls. This tip from rubyonrails-talk seems to have fixed it up.

Default Folder X — Secret Settings

Default Folder secret settings
Originally uploaded by haighy

Amazing. Default Folder X has “secret settings” that allow you to jump to the recently used folders in the Finder. By turning on the two settings pictured, you can use option-up and option-down to instantly jump between recently used folders (the OpenInFrontFinderWindow isn’t strictly necessary for this, but prevents a new window from opening every time).

You can reach this dialog by option-clicking “Settings…” in the Default Folder system preference pane. Read more about the settings on the St Clair software blog here.
